Clarifiers are good for coagulating the particles of minerals, calcium and other contamenants in the water.  They cause the particles to attach to each other and therefore your filter becomes more efficient.  

Note: Just remember that a clarifier will not solve the problem with clarity if your filter is working properly.  Make sure your filter is in tip top shape before wasting money on clarifiers.
