There are 3 types of pool filters. We will explain each one. Each filter filters down to microns. The smaller the micron the better filtration.
Sand Filter: 30 to 50 microns. Easiest to use and operate. Water passed down thru the sand and is returned thru the bottom of the filter back towards pool. Sand needs changed approxiamately every 5 to 7 years. You simply backwash to clean the filter. These are my favorites because of the ease of operation.
Cartridge Filters: 10 to 30 microns. Easy to use but lots of maintenance. Have to take cartridges out to clean. You should always have a spare cartridge since after you clean you need to let the filter dry completly before reinstalling.
DE (Diatomaceous Earth Filters: 0 to 10 microns. This is the best filtration but some maintenance. You have to backwash the dirty DE out and then recharge with fresh DE. About twice per year you have to take apart and clean the grids. The grids will wear out and need replaced after about 3 years. If you have a sewer to backwash in or a good place that the water can drain then this is a great choice of filtration
